MongoDB SSPL License Change Update

Last Tuesday (Oct 16th, 2018), MongoDB Inc. announced that it has elected to switch its license from GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL) to a new license, Server Side Public License (SSPL). The details of the license can be seen here – MongoDB Licensing – SSPL. The SSPL license was submitted to the Open Source Initiative (OSI) for evaluation after their announcement was made, and at this point, it is not clear if it qualifies as an open source license.

At ScaleGrid, we typically launch support for the latest MongoDB version six months after its release and are currently only using the older AGPL versions of MongoDB prior to the Oct 16th announcement. There are several options on the table for our platform with the newer SSPL licensed versions, and we will be announcing our decision soon on those options.

As a MongoDB customer at ScaleGrid, rest assured that this will not impact your current deployments. We are committed to continuing our advanced MongoDB Hosting support, and evolving our platform to meet any new licensing regulations.

This is a developing situation that we are monitoring closely and we will share updates as soon as they are available. In the meanwhile, if you have any questions, please reach out to us at [email protected].
